Ford Fiesta Celebrates First Quarter as Best-selling Small Car in Europe

Ford Fiesta Celebrates First Quarter as Best-selling Small Car in Europe

May 13, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

The final sales numbers for the first quarter of 2013 are now in, and they add up to a significant success for the Ford Fiesta in Europe. Backed by 77,800 deliveries in the January-March period, the Fiesta was the top-selling small car in the region during that time. In fact, Ford sold 41,600 units in March alone, when customers bought a new model at a pace of one car every two minutes. It was a performance that helped grow the car’s retail market share by 1.2 percentage points and marked an 8 percent jump in volume over the same month last year. While the Blue Oval’s award-winning subcompact isn’t moving at quite that speed in the U.S., the Fiesta has been enjoying considerable momentum in this country in recent months: U.S. deliveries have increased for two months in a row now, capped off by another 18.4 percent gain in April, on the strength of 6,080 sales. The automaker’s new 1.0-liter, three-cylinder EcoBoost engine will arrive in European dealerships for the 2014 model year. Named last year’s International Engine of the Year, the powerplant can be found in 25 percent of Fiesta models sold in Europe in 2012. “It’s clear from the rate that our new Fiesta is flying off forecourts that it’s striking a chord with Europe’s small car customers,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president of Marketing, Sales and Service, Ford of Europe. “The small-car segment is probably more competitive than it has ever been and the new Fiesta is gaining retail market share and reaching new customers on the strength of its design, technology and drive dynamics.”

Fiesta-based Ford EcoSport Takes off in Thailand

Fiesta-based Ford EcoSport Takes off in Thailand

Providing a fun-sized, fun-to-drive choice for urban customers, the redesigned Ford EcoSport made its recent debut at the 34 th annual Bangkok International Motor Show. It’s the next generation of the vehicle that pioneered the subcompact  crossover segment in 2003. The EcoSport has been comprehensively updated to help the company continue its momentum from last year, when Ford set an all-time record for retail sales in both Thailand and the Association for Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) market as a whole. “The all-new Ford EcoSport is yet another milestone in our product-led transformation across the region,” said Matt Bradley, president, Ford ASEAN. “It marries the best of both worlds—fusing the maneuverability and fuel economy of a [small] car with the practicality and robustness of an SUV in a contemporary package.” Bradley’s not just boasting about the EcoSport’s capabilities. Despite its tidy dimensions, Ford claims the nimble new EcoSport can ford through more than 21 inches of water. It even offers traditional SUV-style design cues, too, like a spare tire mounted on the rear tailgate. On the other hand, as explained by Graham Pearson, vehicle line director for small cars for Ford’s Asia Pacific region: “We packed the EcoSport with a long list of smart and intuitive features that can help reduce the frustration that can accompany congested urban traffic. “From an award-winning connectivity system that plays your favorite music at a single voice command to advanced technologies that help you remain in control of the SUV at all times, the EcoSport keeps you relaxed as you drive.” Which means the EcoSport’s rivals better not relax at all

Ford EcoBoost Named International Engine of the Year

Ford EcoBoost Named International Engine of the Year

June 15, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

Earning the highest score ever awarded by judges, Ford’s new 1.0-liter, three-cylinder EcoBoost engine was recently named International Engine of the Year by Engine Technology International magazine. It was called “a fitting victory for a truly remarkable engine” by Dean Slavnich, chairman of the awards and editor of the publication, and was one of three titles earned by the powerplant in this year’s competition. It also scored as the top entry smaller than 1.0 liter—since it actually has a displacement mark of 999 cubic centimeters—and as the globe’s best new engine. And although the pint-sized powerplant is currently available only in the European Ford Focus, and will next be used in the Blue Oval’s Euro-only C-MAX and B-MAX multi-purpose vehicles, the automaker has made it clear that it will be deployed in American products beginning next year. Ford has not released U.S. specs, but it’s worth noting that when the engine is tuned for the European Focus, it can make up to 123 hp and deliver more than 56 mpg in the European testing cycle. That’s the beauty of EcoBoost technology, which combines features like turbocharging, direct injection and continuously variable valve timing for a surprisingly pleasant mix of high-efficiency horsepower. “For a three-cylinder to power a vehicle like the Ford Focus with such ease proves that the future is very bright for the IC (internal combustion) engine,” added Slavnich. “Power, response and very good real-world fuel consumption figures are just the tip of the iceberg when it come to this engine and what it offers drivers today. Well done, Ford!”
